The Client
The Talwalkar's were a previous client of ours. They purchased a new home and called us to see if we would install a landscape for them without compromising the native surroundings. We started on a design in January 2006 and created an outdoor living space which included a fireplace, pond style water feature in the backyard and a column rock water feature in the front yard, Slate patio, irrigation, night lighting to enjoy in the evening, plant material, lawn and various other elements.

The client initially requested a small column rock water feature in the front yard. After looking at the large size of the home's entrance and how beautiful it was, a small water feature was not appropriate and it would have been out of proportion to the home. Also, instead of using a Bobcat we craned in the large column rocks to avoid cracking their driveway.

The Challenge
There were numerous challenges with this project including; the backyard was originally built on fill dirt. 90% of this fill was clay. We needed to cut out and sculpture the yard without compromising existing 80 foot tall Cedar and Maple trees. Further, the job was installed in the dead of winter, with typical Oregon rainy weather and some snow too. We needed to protect a native creek to the south of the property by preventing run off from spilling into the creek. Our backyard access was limited to an 8 foot wide path, and the private access road to the front of the property was shared by 2 other neighbors, where courteous communication with them was critical for us.

The Solution

Some of the unique points of this site are as follows: By thinning out some of the existing native plant growth we created a back drop planting canvas that utilized the yard as an echo chamber for the water feature. This allowed us to install a smaller pump for the water feature and we were able to create the same sound effect with less water flow and lower electrical cost for the client.
